2/7/07 Dan V Paul

At the UWmilwaukee chess club on the union second floor I sat down for a brutal two hour game against an unknown but equally skilled opponent named Paul. It was a freindly game, we discussed some aspects of play a few times throughout, but it had its intense moments. Paul is a tank of a chess player. His style of play isnt overly aggressive or defensive and their were no brilliant combinations or wild gambits. But every phase and situation that he was in was answered solidly, a good opening defence against the English or the Botvinnik variation as I was playing it, a queenside push in the middle game with a closed center (I disagree with bringing the queen to Qa5+ in the early middle game however) and an endgame that worked his bishop, queen and pawns somewhat smoothly in conjuction with eachother. He made only one major mistake by hanging the rook on h1 but even that is debatable. It could also be interpreted as a sacrifice for position as it really evened up material and gave him an advantage of time and position. The annotated game follows:
